Duration: 12 minutes

Program Note

Dano: Welcoming Summer is inspired by Dano (단오), a traditional Korean holiday that celebrates the arrival of summer on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. Dano is both sacred and festive: historically observed through rituals to ward off misfortune and pray for health and abundance, and joyfully marked by fragrant baths in sweet flag water, swinging games, wrestling matches, and communal gatherings in nature.

The piece unfolds in three contrasting yet interconnected musical landscapes:

The first evokes a majestic and sacred atmosphere. A somber double bass solo opens the work, followed by a ceremonial piano cadenza that conjures the spirit of ancient rites performed to protect against evil and invoke blessings.

The second bursts forth with lively, rhythmic joy—a celebration of Dano’s playful energy. Driven by syncopation and vivid textures, this section captures the exhilaration of swinging games, dancing, and the communal thrill of welcoming summer.

The third offers a moment of natural serenity. Lush, fragrant sonorities bloom across the ensemble, painting a delicate soundscape of fresh greenery, warm breezes, and the gentle harmony between humans and nature.

Dano: Welcoming Summer is a sonic ritual that bridges past and present, blending traditional Korean spirit with contemporary orchestral colors. It invites listeners into a seasonal and cultural threshold, where old and new, East and West, the sacred and the celebratory come together in music.
